How to embrace the parenting journey

10.31.2019

The dictionary defines parenting as “the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood”.

Parenthood is undoubtedly a huge responsibility and the above definition highlights the many facets of this important role; physical, emotional, social and intellectual. Each facet works not in isolation but in collaboration with one another.

Our children look up to us, wholly dependent on us for love and care when they are babies. Over time, they grow up to become more independent.

However, to fully embrace our role as parents, this definition also applies to us. We need to be filled to a certain degree in each of these areas in order to give the best of ourselves to our children.

The mind is one place to start. The saying goes that “a battle is first won in the mind”. Each of the facets highlighted in the definition above is connected to our mind. It is the arena where we choose to fight or flee. Make up your mind that you are going to live out life as the best version of you. Your children deserve that version and so do you.

Physical

Be more active. Seek out an outdoor activity or activities you can enjoy on your own or with family and friends. I find out that just taking a walk or spending time in the garden is an energy booster for me. The fresh air and being close to nature brings about a lift to my physical and mental state.

Emotional

Greater focus is being placed on emotional and mental well-being to create awareness and rightly so! Looking after yourself is a responsibility you cannot outsource hence it is important to make it a priority.

As parents, it is common place to find our needs at the bottom of the priority list. Selflessness is great but not when it is detrimental to one’s health and well-being. Find that happy place and do not let go.

Live in gratitude for it attracts even more joy. That intentional state of being thankful and counting our blessings especially during challenging times changes our perspective and mindset.

Social

Is it just me or do you sometimes feels like your children have more of a social life than you do? This is one area I intend to work on. I recognise that it is important to hang out and have fun with friends and like-minded people. Life should be one of balance and it is quite alright to take off the mummy hat every now and then.

Intellectual

Intellectual does not necessarily have to be one undertaking formal study (which of course is great). It is more about broadening our mind so that we can engage and reason objectively. It is openness to change, trying out new ideas, taking in new information, expanding our thinking and perspective.

The beauty of the digital age is such that it offers various learning streams such as videos, podcasts, blogs, vlogs, books, etcetera that cover diverse topics. The day one stops learning is the day one dies.

Challenge yourself today by picking 1 area and make up your mind to take a step into changing it for the better. You will soon find that the transformation experienced in the one area will have a ripple effect on other areas of your life.

Not keen on doing it alone? Look for an accountability partner or group and experience that journey together.

Fill up your tank so you can give the best of yourself to your children and loved ones.

Are you ready?
